Permits, light and what to expect on the day.
Narrowboats, bridges, water and quiet. That is what brings people to Little Venice with a camera.

The towpaths belong to the Canal and River Trust and the surrounding streets are Westminster. Check both before a shoot that uses the water and the road.

Towpaths are narrow and shared with cyclists. A tripod blocks the path, so plan for handheld.

A location is a corner at an hour, not a postcode. Pick one of these and build the session around it.
An hour in Little Venice is three stops, not one.
We start at Browning's Pool, because it is the frame most people came for and it is quietest first.
Then Warwick Avenue bridge, which changes the background without changing the light.
We finish at The towpath towards Paddington, which gives a different scale and a different mood.
Spring and summer, when the boats are painted and planted.
Autumn for reflections, when the trees turn over the water.
Winter mornings are the quietest hour in central London.
Colour reads well against dark water.
Avoid long trailing fabric on a narrow towpath.
Flat shoes, because the path is uneven and shared with bicycles.
The area under the Westway gives shelter and a very different background.
Paddington Basin is five minutes away and entirely modern.
More than one authority covers this location, so establish which ground your camera stands on before you apply.
A park, a street and a private estate can meet within a hundred metres here.
Apply to each one that applies, and allow the longest of their notice periods.
If the shoot moves during the session, that is more than one permission.
The narrowboats are homes. People live on them, and a camera pointed through a window is pointed into somebody's front room.
Shoot along the water rather than across it, and the boats become a backdrop instead of a subject.
The cafe boats and the pool at Browning's are the widest points, which gives you room to step back without standing in the path.
Winter mornings here are the quietest hour in central London.
Nearby, with different rules and a different look: Tower Bridge, Hampstead Heath and Sky Garden.
