We walk a route agreed in advance, stopping at three or four spots. Most of the hour is walking and talking, which is what makes the frames look unforced.

Three locations that suit this kind of shoot, each with its own permission rules:

Mariya's verdict. Book the location before the guests. Changing a date is easy, changing a permit is not.
Almost nobody has been photographed together before, and it shows in the first ten minutes.
That is why the session is built as a walk. By the third stop the shoulders drop and the pictures start.
If the photographs are for a wedding website or a save-the-date, say so at the start. It changes the crops I shoot.
| When | What is photographed | Why it is placed there |
|---|---|---|
| First 10 minutes | Walking and talking, almost no photographs | Nobody is relaxed in the first frame, and pretending otherwise shows |
| Stop one | The recognisable backdrop everybody came for | Get it early, while the light and the crowd allow |
| Stop two | A quieter street or a doorway | Closer frames, less background |
| Stop three | Movement: walking, turning, holding on | The frames people actually print |
| Last 10 minutes | Whatever is working | By now you have forgotten the camera |
The order matters more than the length. A shoot that starts in the wrong place never catches up.
Two outfits at most, one of them simple.
Shoes you can walk in between stops.
A rough idea of where the photographs will be used, because that sets the crops.
An hour that is not squeezed between two other things.
Booking midday in summer, when the light is at its worst.
Choosing a location neither of you has ever visited.
Planning four locations inside one hour.
Forgetting that a Royal Park permit covers one hour and ten people.
Around forty retouched images in a private gallery.
Delivery within seven business days.
Files sized for print and for social.
