Beauty photography demands precision. Skin texture, light placement, colour accuracy, and the subtlest details of a makeup application all need to be flawless at full resolution. This is photography where millimetres matter — where a single highlight or shadow defines the entire image.
I photograph beauty campaigns for skincare brands, makeup artists, cosmetics companies, and hair care labels across London. My W14 studio is equipped with professional beauty lighting rigs specifically designed for close-up skin work, and I work with experienced hair and makeup teams who understand the technical demands of beauty photography.

Beauty photography is a distinct discipline within fashion and commercial photography. The lighting setups are different, the retouching standards are higher, and the margin for error is smaller. A portrait photographer can take a flattering headshot, but beauty photography requires controlled specular highlights, precise colour rendering, and the ability to make skin look natural at extreme magnification.
I work closely with makeup artists and hair stylists who specialise in beauty work for camera. If you need team recommendations, I can connect you with professionals I trust.
Production detail
A beauty brief begins with the final crop, not a generic moodboard. A campaign image for a shop window, a close product page, a magazine cover and a vertical social advert place different demands on skin detail, negative space and the direction of the model's gaze. Before confirming the lighting plan, Mariya asks where each image will appear, which product claim it supports and how closely the customer will see it.
References are separated into four decisions: skin finish, colour, crop and expression. This prevents a board full of attractive pictures from hiding contradictions. A luminous skincare image needs different preparation from a high-pigment makeup story; wet-look hair requires different control from a clean cosmetic close-up.
| Decision | What is agreed before call time |
|---|---|
| Deliverables | Hero crops, product detail, model-with-product frames and channel-specific ratios. |
| Finish | Natural skin texture, highlight control, colour reference and retouching boundaries. |
| Team | Makeup, hair, nails, styling and an on-set decision-maker for the brand. |
| Usage | Territory, channels, duration and whether paid advertising or packaging is included. |
The first approved frame becomes the technical reference for the rest of the day. Exposure, colour and the position of highlights are checked at full size before moving to the next look. Where a product appears in frame, label direction, fill level, fingerprints and cap alignment are treated as part of the photograph rather than left for retouching.
High-end retouching does not mean removing every pore. The aim is to keep recognisable skin while correcting temporary distractions and maintaining the intended cosmetic finish. Permanent features are retained unless the brief explicitly asks otherwise. Product colour and makeup colour are matched against agreed references so that a polished campaign does not misrepresent what is being sold.
The final selection is made against the shot list: one image should not be forced to serve every placement. Files are exported for the agreed print and digital uses, with crop-safe masters where multiple ratios are required. A contact sheet or proofing gallery separates selection from retouching, and filenames can follow the brand's product codes or campaign naming convention.
