Chelsea photoshoot

Permits, light and what to expect on the day.

Garden squares, the King's Road, white stucco, blossom in spring. That is what brings people to Chelsea with a camera.

Permission

The film office is run by FilmFixer. Shooting on council land or on the public highway needs a permit through their application system, and charges depend on the location and the disruption.

Checked on 4 October 2026. Rules and fees change, so confirm with the authority before the shoot.

When the light works

Soft even light most of the day because the streets are wide and the buildings are pale.

What to expect on the day

Blossom on Chelsea streets lasts about two weeks in spring and the pavements fill with photographers. Book early in the morning if that is the frame you want.

Getting there and what to carry

Sloane Square and South Kensington sit either side of the King's Road.

Nothing heavy. The good frames are spread out and you will walk between them.

Standing in a private garden square. Most of them are locked and residents hold the keys.

Duke of York SquareOpen paving, modern and cleanAny time, even light

A location is a corner at an hour, not a postcode. Pick one of these and build the session around it.

What a session here usually looks like

An hour in Chelsea is three stops, not one.

We start at Bywater Street, because it is the frame most people came for and it is quietest first.

Then Cheyne Walk, which changes the background without changing the light.

We finish at Duke of York Square, which gives a different scale and a different mood.

When in the year to shoot here

Blossom in late March and April, which lasts around two weeks and draws crowds.

Autumn on Cheyne Walk, when the trees turn.

Summer is workable but the light is high and hard at midday.

What to wear against this background

Soft tailoring and simple dresses suit the stucco.

Pastels work against white houses in a way they do not in Shoreditch.

Flat shoes for the cobbles by the river.

If the weather turns

The Saatchi Gallery forecourt is sheltered on one side.

Sloane Square has covered frontages if rain arrives.

Getting the permit, step by step

The borough film office is run by FilmFixer, which handles permits for council land and the public highway.

You apply through their system with the location, the date, the crew size and the equipment.

Charges depend on the location and on how much disruption the shoot causes, so a handheld portrait session is treated differently from a lighting setup.

Parking suspensions and road closures are arranged through the same office and need longer notice.

What gets photographed here

Nearby, with different rules and a different look: Kensington, Notting Hill and Shoreditch.
