In short: A wedding gallery is three galleries in one: the documentary record of the day, twenty minutes of portraits, and the detail frames that hold it together. Most regret comes from spending the whole day on the first and skipping the second.

Couples deciding what they actually want photographed, and what they will regret not having.

1. Getting ready, both sides

The hour before is the most photographable of the day: real nerves, real faces, natural window light, nobody performing yet.

2. Twenty minutes alone, straight after the ceremony

Non-negotiable. It is the only window where you are dressed, emotional and not yet being congratulated by two hundred people.

3. The first look, if you have one

Whether or not it suits tradition, it produces reactions you cannot stage — and it moves portraits earlier, when everyone still looks fresh.

4. Guests as they are

Documentary frames of people talking, laughing, crying at the speeches. In ten years these matter more than the styled shots.

5. Detail frames, shot early

Rings, invitations, shoes, flowers, the table before anyone sits. Photograph them before the room fills or they will not exist.

6. Golden hour escape

Ten minutes outside near sunset, away from the party. The light is the best of the day and the two of you finally have a moment.

7. The dance floor with flash

Direct flash, hard shadows, motion. It is the register that matches the energy — a softly lit dance floor photograph looks like nothing happened.

8. The exit

Sparklers, confetti, a car, rain — whatever it is, plan it while you can still make decisions, not at midnight.

Where to shoot it

The venue decides most of it. The two questions worth asking in advance: where is open shade at the time of the portraits, and where can you go if it rains. In London that second answer matters — an indoor fallback with a window is the difference between a full gallery and a gap in it.

Check the exact landowner before fixing the call sheet. London parks, streets and private estates do not share one photography rule; the location guides name the responsible authority and the date on which its guidance was checked.

The mistakes that cost the most

Leaving portraits until after dinner. Booking a schedule with no margin, so the first delay eats the photography. Not eating. And giving a photographer a list of forty group combinations, which takes ninety minutes and produces forty near-identical photographs nobody looks at.

More on wedding shoots

How long do wedding portraits take?

Twenty to thirty minutes for the couple, plus about three minutes per group combination. Ten group shots is a realistic list; forty is not.

What time of day is best for wedding photos?

The hour before sunset for portraits, and the hour before the ceremony for getting-ready frames. Midday sun is the hardest light of the day for faces.

Do we need a first look?

Not traditionally, but it moves portraits earlier when everyone is fresher, and it produces a reaction that cannot be staged later.
